Even Ben Franklin's best social tactics were not working with one unfriendly politician till he one day asked to borrow the fellow's prized book - after overhearing it mentioned with a tone of reverence - after than Ben was very appealing and the fellow offered favors and support. Like passing a test, Ben proved he must be smart since he had a common interest. People like people who like what they like. Plus as Franklin said "he that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another than he whom you yourself have obliged." Small favors at least! Big ones frustrate people.
