Nice seems good - overdone and they walk on you and lower your status. Keep aware of what is fair and give not too much. Express your wants and feelings while reading their body language in response and listening to theirs. Spare advice unless you really think it through and they'd be certain to be grateful later. Balance is the key. Expect that and act like something is really wrong if they are taking too much without providing gifts somewhere else. Simplest may be just toss out the nice and swap in considerate and fair.
